The Royal Botanic Garden

A peaceful world of plants and sweeping city views

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh offers a restorative change of pace just north of the city centre. Set across more than 70 acres, the Garden brings together plants from around the world within one of the richest living collections of its kind. Wander through the Rock Garden, Woodland Garden, Arboretum and Chinese Hillside, pause beside the pond, or seek out seasonal colour among the rhododendrons and Scottish native plants. The landscape is beautiful throughout the year, with broad views back towards Edinburgh’s skyline adding to the sense of space. Beyond its tranquil paths, the Botanics is an internationally important centre for plant science, horticulture, conservation and education. General admission to the outdoor Garden is free, making it a rewarding choice for a leisurely morning, an unhurried afternoon or a quiet return visit.

Getting There

The Botanics gives Ben Cruachan Collection guests a peaceful counterpoint to Edinburgh’s historic streets, with practical routes from both accommodation locations.

From Ben Cruachan Guest House and Ben Cruachan Rooms & Studios, McDonald Road
Walk west along McDonald Road towards Broughton Road, continue through Canonmills, then head north along Inverleith Row to the Garden’s East Gate.

From Caledonian Apartments, Caledonian Crescent
Under normal service, walk to Haymarket and take a Newhaven-bound tram to Princes Street. Connect with a city-centre bus serving Inverleith Row and alight by the Garden’s East Gate. A taxi directly to the West Gate on Arboretum Place is a simple alternative.

Bus routes and Garden access arrangements can change, so check the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh visitor page and live Lothian Buses information before leaving.
