Set within leafy parkland on Belford Road, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art offers two complementary galleries and an excellent change of pace from Edinburgh’s busier historic centre. Modern One presents Scottish and international modern and contemporary art, with displays spanning Surrealism, Cubism, Expressionism and work made from the 1960s onwards. Across the road, Modern Two combines changing exhibitions with memorable permanent installations, including Eduardo Paolozzi’s reconstructed studio and Richard Wright’s Stairwell Project. The grounds form part of the experience, with more than 20 sculptures and Charles Jencks’s dramatic landform outside Modern One. General admission is free, although some exhibitions may be ticketed. Allow time for both buildings, the sculpture park and a relaxed café stop, then consider continuing through nearby Dean Village or along the Water of Leith.
