Playhouse Theatre

Grand-scale theatre, music and comedy in central Edinburgh

Edinburgh Playhouse brings the scale and excitement of a major touring venue to the heart of the city. Opened in 1929 as a grand cinema and saved from demolition in the 1970s, it returned in 1980 as the theatre audiences know today. Its vast auditorium, original proscenium arch and restored period details create a suitably dramatic setting for hit musicals, live music, comedy and special events. The programme changes throughout the year, drawing leading productions and performers to its Greenside Place stage. With Picardy Place tram stop close by and bars available inside, it is easy to shape an evening around the performance. Guests should book through the official box office, check the event’s individual guidance and arrive with time for security checks. It is an enduring Edinburgh landmark and a splendid choice for a memorable night out.

Getting There

An evening at Edinburgh Playhouse is especially convenient for Ben Cruachan Collection guests, with both accommodation locations linked to the theatre’s city-centre setting.

From Ben Cruachan Guest House and Ben Cruachan Rooms & Studios, McDonald Road
Walk towards Leith Walk, then continue uphill towards Picardy Place. The theatre is on Greenside Place, just off Picardy Place. A short taxi journey is another convenient option, particularly after an evening performance.

From Caledonian Apartments, Caledonian Crescent
Walk to Haymarket tram stop and, under normal service, take a Newhaven-bound tram to Picardy Place. From the stop, follow signs towards Greenside Place and the theatre.

Check the performance time, venue arrival guidance and live public transport information before leaving. Allow sufficient time for the venue’s security checks.
